Researchers develop an enzyme that can break down plastic in just 24 hours rather than centuries

▫️ A group of researchers from the University of Texas at Austin developed a novel enzyme variation that can boost recycling on a wide scale, decreasing the impact of plastic pollution.

▫️ FAST-PETase (functional, active, stable, and tolerant PETase) is a new enzyme derived from a natural PETase that allows bacteria to destroy and change the plastic.

▫️ In as little as 24 hours, the enzyme was able to complete a ‘circular process’ of breaking down the plastic into smaller bits and chemically putting it back together.
