The world can grow better crops by replacing toxic chemical fertilizers with human urine

▫️ A group of scientists told national French news service AFP today that human urine may be a way to better fertilize large-scale agricultural produce than current methods farmers use.

▫️ “Our urine”, say researcher Fabien Esculier. To grow, “plants need nutrients, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium,” explains the engineer and coordinator of the OCAPI research program. When we eat, we ingest these nutrients before “excrete them, mostly through urine.”

▫️ Synthetic nitrogen fertilizers increase agricultural output but damage the environment when used in excess. Their prices are also skyrocketing, particularly in light of the conflict in Ukraine. Scientists are now looking for a solution to this confluence of challenges abroad.
