Amazon Bans Two Companies That Fills Fake Reviews At Sites

Amazon filed a lawsuit against two companies on Tuesday, alleging that they worked as fake-review brokers.

AppSally and Rebatest are accused of encouraging fraudulent reviews on Amazon’s online marketplace, according to lawsuits filed in King County Superior Court in Seattle. In exchange for free products or cash, the companies allegedly connected third-party vendors with consumers who would provide positive reviews of their products.

The action is the latest attempt by Amazon to combat phoney reviews on its vast third-party marketplace. The marketplace currently accounts for more than half of all e-commerce sales, and it has helped the company achieve new heights in terms of income. However, as Amazon’s marketplace has evolved to encompass millions of third-party sellers, phoney reviews have become a particularly vexing problem.
